Psalms 119:105 Your Word is a Lamp to my feet and a Light to my path.
The Christian life is described both as a walk and a race. There are times when we need to walk, times when we need to jog, times when we need to run, and times when we need to be still and not take one more step. How do we know when it is the right time to do any of these? When we walk a physical path during the daylight hours, if we are paying attention, we will pick up on indicators that let us know when we should walk, run, or stand still. We are able to see and manage where to step, depending on the terrain. If we walk these same paths at night, in the dark, it helps immensely if we have some source of light to help us see where to step, and which way to go in order to stay on the path. A light helps us see the warning signs that tell us to either run or not take another step. That being said, we live in a very dark world. The only way that we can successfully maneuver this life, and stay on the path that God desires us to walk on, is to continually shine the light of God's Word on both our feet and the path itself. It is for this reason that it is of utmost importance that we prayerfully read and study God's Word. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 tells us, "All Scripture is given by the inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works." God's Word teaches us who God is, who Christ is, and who the Holy Spirit is. It teaches us who we are and why we need Jesus. It teaches us how to live a life that honors God. It convicts us when we stray, it corrects us so that we can get back on the path God wants us to walk. The Word teaches us how to stay on that path, and helps us to maneuver the potholes, speed bumps, and land mines we encounter along the way. The Bible teaches us what we need to know so that we stay on the path of righteousness and helps us to know which path to take when we reach a crossroad. Through the guidance of the Spirit, using the Word, He shows us when we need to slow down, speed up, or even stop. We cannot walk the dark path of life without the guidance of the Lamp and Light God has provided for us. Along the way He helps us to share that Light with others who are lost on the path He puts us on. He uses us to help light the way for those who are not only lost and searching, but also to help brighten the light of those whose lamp has grown dim because of sin. Can we see why it is so important to consistently and faithfully rely on God's Word, every single day?
Today, God extends an invitation to you to accept His free gift of salvation (Rom 7:23). Will you accept it? Anyone who calls on Jesus, by faith, in repentance, confessing your sins, will receive eternal life. Do not put off calling on Him, and receive His free gift of salvation today (Rom 10:13).
