His Word Will Never Pass Away

Verse of the day: Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

In this chapter of Matthew, the Lord warns His disciples of the destruction of the Temple, which takes place about 40 years later. He also tells them of the End Times and His return. In 2 Peter 3, we are reminded that in these last days there will be scoffers who will mock us for believing that Jesus is coming back. There reason for such mocking is because Jesus has not yet returned as the Word of God tells us. Yet, we are also reminded that God is not slack concerning His promise (or any of His promises) that He is coming back. God’s timing is not like ours, as a thousand years are like one day, and one day like a thousand years, to Him. His desire is that all would come to repentance and not perish. Some that were alive at that time would see the destruction of the Temple, but not see the Lord’s return. Although the destruction of the Temple should have served as proof that Jesus’ words would come to pass in respect to the End Times and His return, He goes on to tell them that even though Heaven and Earth will pass away, His words will never pass away; because His words are eternal. Jesus used the parable of the fig tree, in this chapter, to explain that the signs of His return would be as clear as their ability to see that summer was coming, based on their observations of the blooming of the fig tree. So today, we can know, with confidence, that Jesus’ return is real and is closer than ever before; especially as we observe what is happening in the world (the Middle East in particular). The fact of the matter is that all that we see will pass away. This is a reality of life as we observe the frailty of life, and how we wither away as the grass (1 Pet 1:24). Heaven and Earth will pass away, and be burned up (2 Pet 3:10), but the Word of God will endure (1 Pet 1:25). Too often, we put our confidence in things that do not last. Relationships pass (for a number of reasons), and material things wear down and fade away; yet, these are the things we value most in this lifetime. Take a moment, right now, and hold your Bible. Have you ever stopped to consider that with all that has happened since the creation of man, the only thing that has endured the test of time, and has transcended time, to this very day, is the Word of God? How many people have been born and died? How many nations have risen to power and fallen? How many things have changed, and continue to change? How many things have grown obsolete and are no more? Yet, this Word that we hold in our hands, and have the opportunity to read every day is probably our most neglected treasure. When all else, and everyone else, has failed us, the Word of God has remained true. It is the source of our comfort in dangerous times. It is our assurance in uncertain times. It brings us peace and joy in the midst of trials and tribulations. Why? Because the Word of God is alive; and though all else around us dies, it will live on forever! Sadly, I see too many of God’s people panicking and reacting like the world when something troubling happens in the world, whether it pertains to the political temperature of a nation or rumors of wars. The bottom line is that the born again believer has no reason to panic if he/she is an avid student of God’s Word; for we who are God’s children have the greatest Teacher in the Universe, the Holy Spirit. We must stop being preoccupied with what is happening in the world to the point of becoming useless for the Kingdom. Instead, we need to measure what is happening to what God already told us will happen in these days, and allow that to motivate us to live righteously, stay busy with the work of the Lord, sharing Christ with the lost, and serving Him with fervency; knowing that His return will come sooner than any of us know, and when least expected (Matt 24:36; 2 Pet 3:10-13). We know this because His Word is true, will never fail us, and will never ever pass away; making it the most trustworthy source of truth we possess.

The return of Jesus will be unexpected, like a thief in the night. The time to receive Him is before we die or before His return (whichever comes first). Call upon Him today, repenting and confessing your sins (Rom 3:23), and accepting, by faith, eternal life that can only be obtained thru Him (Rom 6:23; 10:13); before it is too late.
