Upside Down for Jesus

Acts 17:6 ”But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, “These who have turned the world upside down have come here too.“

In Acts 11, the Bible tells us that in Antioch was the first time that followers of the Way (believers) were called Christians. This was meant to be a derogatory term, but in actuality it was a compliment, because it meant “a little Christ”. What earn them such an honor? Was it because they attended a local church? Was it because they performed religious rituals? Was it because they “believed” in God? Today, many people claim to be Christians, but get offended when we talk to them about Jesus. They want to talk about a “general” God, but have no desire for the Son of God, our Lord, Savior, and King, the One true God, Jesus Christ. You see, there in lies the difference. The Christians of chapter 11 were born again believers who were not only proclaiming the Gospel message about Jesus boldly, but they were also living life for Jesus boldly; so much so that they were turning the world upside down. Although persecution had scattered them, wherever they went the Good News was preached. So how are we doing? I mean, those of us who have believed and called upon the Name of Jesus, trusting only Him for eternal life? Stop and look around. Are we turning the world upside down, or are we turning our back on Jesus? Would the world around us recognize us as someone who not only claims to be a Christian, but also lives like one? Are we intentionally looking for opportunities to share the good news with a lost and dying world, even if it means that we’ll be persecuted and rejected; even by those closest to us? We are in a time when Christians are so afraid to offend others with the truth of God’s Word, that we are remaining silent and allowing loved ones and friends to perish without Jesus. We are so in love with the world and all the emptiness it has to offer, that people are actually surprised when they learn that we are followers of Jesus. To be called a Christian is to be an ambassador for Jesus. It means that we are taking up our cross daily, serving Him and others, and letting His light shine through us in this dark world. It means that we should be living in such a way that we are turning the world around us, our circle of influence, upside down for Jesus. How are we really doing?

Today, God extends an invitation to you to accept His free gift of salvation (Romans 6:23). Will you accept it? Anyone who calls on the Name of Jesus, by faith, in repentance, confessing your sins, will receive eternal life. Do not put off calling on Him, and receive His free gift of salvation (Romans 10:13).
